Sapsan High-Speed Train

The recently introduced Moscow – St Petersburg high-speed railway has been active since 2009 and is today by far the most popular way of traveling between the two capitals of Russia. The connection is operated by Sapsan High-speed Train, an innovative and elegant design from the company Siemens-Velaro which covers the gap between the two cities in just about 4:30h traveling at a speed of 250 km per hour. A track upgrade is scheduled in the next future to allow the train to safely reach a cruise speed of 330 km per hour.

The Sapsan trains measure 250 m in length and can carry up to 600 passengers. Departures every day from Moscow – Leningradsky Station (Komsomolskaya metro station) and from St Petersburg – Moskovsky Station (Ploschad` Vosstanya and Mayakovskaya metro stations). Tickets are available for sale from 45 days before the departure. Price vary according to the season and the compartment category. Regular Russian passenger trains connect daily the cities of Moscow and St Petersburg with a travel time of 8/9 hours. The trains are equipped with relatively comfortable full size berths that allow the passenger to sleep during the travel. There are 3 compartment categories available: First Class (Lux) 2-berth compartments, Second Class (Kupe) 4-berth compartments and one or more economy class (Platzkart) open coaches with 50 berths. While the night train may not be the fanciest or most comfortable way to travel between Moscow and St Petersburg, its usually cheaper, offers decent accommodation for one night and saves you as much time as possible for sightseeing: because of that, is no doubt the best solution for backpackers and travelers on a tight schedule. The high-speed railway connection between Russia and Finland is one of the fastest and most efficient of northern Europe. The “Allegro” high-speed train, a modern high-speed electric train with a cruise speed of 220 km/h and a maximum capacity of 350 passengers, covers the distance between St Petersburg and Helsinki in only 3:30h. Currently the train offers a morning departure and an afternoon departure each day, an upgrade to 4 departures per day is planned for the next future.
